Five of the best wine bars in Perth

Perth’s small bar boom has brought a bevy of stylish wine bars to the city and suburbs. So where can you go to find a delicious drop and moreish morsels for date night, a catch-up with your bestie or after-work drinks? These are my picks for the best wine bars in Perth – places I’d go back to over and over.

Wines of While, Northbridge

A small wine store and bar on William Street (just a few minutes’ walk from Perth Station), Wines of While spotlights natural wines that are organic, biodynamic, and – of course – tasty. Grab a table on the street on a sunny afternoon and people-watch. You can get a bottle to share with companions or choose from their current selection of wines by the glass, and use it to wash down a bite from their Mediterranean-inspired food menu. Found a new favourite? Get a bottle to take home.

Best for: natural wines

Whisper Wine Bar, Fremantle

Whisper Wine Bar on Essex Street sits behind a limestone façade that’s typical of Freo, but would be equally at home in Provence – a perfect fit for this self-proclaimed “little piece of France in Fremantle”. The wine list is largely balanced between Western Australian and European bottles (from France, Spain, Italy and Germany), with the odd Californian, Argentinian or New Zealand wine in there too. Peckish? There’s a range of cheese and charcuterie available to complete your trip to France.

Best for: European vibes

Shadow Wine Bar, Northbridge

Located on William Street practically next door to the Perth Cultural Centre, Shadow Wine Bar is a perfect inclusion in a sophisticated night out in the city. They offer an extensive range of wines (heavy on Italian) by the bottle alongside a food menu that suits for nibbles or dinner.

Best for: pre- or post-show drinks

Mummucc, Wembley

Neighbourhood wine bar Mummucc in the northern suburbs is a sister venue to the hugely popular pizzeria Monsterella a few doors down, and you can order pizza from there or choose from the bar menu of share plates if hunger strikes (don’t miss the burrata). The wine list skews Italian and natural, including more unusual options like orange and chilled red wines. Bottles are also available for takeaway.

Best for: intimate drinks and dining

Lalla Rookh, Perth CBD

Sticking with the Italian theme, we have Lalla Rookh, a sunken venue accessed off St Georges Terrace. The biggest venue on this list, it’s popular with the city after-work crowd, and has a menu of share plates and pizzas to keep everyone happy. The extensive wine list spans various regions of Italy, with Australian wines well-represented too. The wines available by the glass can also be ordered in a 375ml carafe, European-style. Salute!

Best for: going with a group
