The best wine bars in Fremantle

These days, Freo has something cool hidden around every corner. Behind historic façades you’ll find food and drinks to drool over. While the port city’s big breweries are drawcards, there’s also a solid wine scene. Here are five wine bars to try in Fremantle.

Whisper Wine Bar, Essex Street, Fremantle

The limestone façade of Whisper Wine Bar is typically Freo, but would be equally at home in Provence – a perfect fit for this venue that describes itself as “a little piece of France in Fremantle”. The wine list is largely balanced between Western Australian and European bottles (from France, Spain, Italy and Germany), with the odd Californian, Argentinian or New Zealand wine in there too. Peckish? There’s a range of cheese and charcuterie available to complete your trip to France.

Best for: European vibes

Nieuw Ruin, Norfolk Street, Fremantle

Devoted to “good food, good cocktails, weird wines”, Nieuw Ruin sources their bottles in small quantities from independent producers, so you’re sure to find something unique on the menu – which comprises literally hundreds of options, forming walls of wine inside. Their food focuses on local and sustainably sourced ingredients and leans towards the unusual. It’s all tucked into a charming 150-year-old heritage cottage.

Best for: Weird wines (they said it!)

A glass of red wine on a wooden table in front of a red brick bar at Mr Chapple in Fremantle

Mr Chapple, South Terrace, Fremantle

Located in the Old Synagogue (a collection of four distinct venues), Mr Chapple is a cosy little bar focused on cocktails and craft beers, but wine lovers have a great reason to head in: their “Wines of the Month” list, a dozen interesting drops curated by local liquor experts Old Bridge Cellars (one of Perth’s best boutique wine shops). Most of these are available by the glass and it’s a great chance to try something a bit different. On the food side, there’s a range of share plates available – or you could head to one of the adjoining venues to eat, like The Arbor for pub food or Tonic + Ginger for South East Asian fusion.

Best for: Monthly catch-ups with a mate

Mrs Brown, Queen Victoria Street, North Fremantle

Another cosy venue with exposed brick walls and vintage furniture, Mrs Brown is a place where you can find a couch by the fireplace in winter or enjoy a balmy evening in the courtyard in summer. Their range of mostly Aussie wines includes plenty to enjoy by the glass at friendly price points of about $10. You can also order burgers from their next-door neighbour, Flipside.

Best for: A casual date

Young George, George Street, East Fremantle

In a heritage building on East Freo’s good-vibes George Street, Young George could be your destination for dinner, one stop on a roving meal where you make your way down the street (try Eugene’s Pizzeria on the corner), or a place for a pre-gig drink if you’re heading to The Duke of George jazz lounge. Head there on a Tuesday night when you can get pizza and wine for $16.

Best for: A night out in the neighbourhood
